Artist Spotlight: Find Yourself through Art with Emily

May 15, 2024 4 min read

“Where do I begin?”
It’s the most common question many of us face when it comes to starting on a creative pursuit.

The blank canvas and empty page feels like an intimidating and unsettling expanse.

In this month’s feature, we’re excited to spotlight Emily (@emilyydianeart), an artist whose deep connection with art has been a guiding light through life’s darkest moments.

From a young age, she found solace in sketching and expression in the simple act of drawing, crafting peace through her pencils and paper.

From sketching her parents, capturing the beauty of nature outside her window, to mimicking her favourite television characters, Emily transmuted ordinary to extraordinary through her artwork.

Recalling her artistic journey, Emily expressed,

“Art has been a part of me since I was very little… I remember spending all afternoon drawing after school for hours and hours, and it brought me a lot of peace, almost like an escape.”

For Emily, art was more than just a hobby; it was a lifeline during her darkest times.

Her story is a powerful reminder of art’s capacity to be a source of comfort and understanding when the world seems otherwise dim.

“Growing up my life was dark and confusing and I was discouraged from art for what felt like everyday, and I didn’t understand why. Art really saved me, it allowed me to create whatever I wanted."

Adding another layer to her narrative, she reveals,

“It taught me to see the beauty in everything, even in things that might be perceived as negative. It makes me feel like I’m working towards something, even if the piece didn’t come out the way I wanted.“

Despite facing discouragement, Emily’s passion for art remained strong and steady.

It became a means for her to explore and appreciate the nuances of life.

Art, she found, is not always about perfection but about the process and the personal growth that comes with it.

“The beauty about art is that it doesn’t come with a bunch of rules, so you can do whatever you feel like. You really can’t make a mistake.” she says, advocating for the freedom to create without fear of mistakes.

For Emily, patience is not just a virtue but a form of self-care.

She encourages others (including you!) to embrace the freedom of self-expression without the pressure of worrying about fitting into any boxed-in standards.

“I think a lot of times people think art should have some deeper meaning behind it, and it’s simply not the case for me all the time. I believe that what you are creating should bring you happiness and it’s easier for me to create what I feel personally attached to at that time.”

In her own wise words, she highlights the utmost importance to hang tough and bounce back, all in the name of blossoming artistically.

“Art has really taught me a lot about myself, and I feel like I’m still learning and discovering new things all the time.”

She cheers on up-and-coming artists to not fret over flubs and to venture outside their comfort zones, treating every error as a valuable gem of insight into their personal growth and creative journey.

“If you want to get better at anything it takes practice, so don’t be afraid to make a mistake or take risks. Those mistakes will teach you valuable information about yourself and your art. Your fears can be a great teacher, and it takes a lot of courage to try something new–it’s ok to be persistent.”

Adding to her story, she's all about transforming everyday stuff into art supplies,
and believes that no creation is too small or simple.

“No matter what medium you choose to start with, it doesn’t have to be something fancy or expensive.
You can make art with literally anything you have”

She also points out how healing it can be to touch base with your own feelings, before opting for art mediums that align with your current emotional state.

“It’s crucial to check in with yourself and how you feel before you start anything new. I have moments where I feel like I could tackle a giant canvas in one day, and others I can’t fathom making a thing, and that’s ok.”

In her concluding thoughts, Emily leaves us with a poignant reminder to tap into our youthful spirits, encouraging us to rediscover the uninhibited joy of creating, just as we did as children.

“Forget you’re an adult for a little bit, and be a little kid again, treat yourself and your art like you were 5, and go insane.”

As we wrap up with Emily’s imprints etched deep within us, we are reminded that art does not discriminate–it’s an open field, inviting every soul to come and run wild in its expanse.

Take yourself off society's pedestal to find peace and acceptance within yourself.

It's in these moments your creative spirit will find its way back home to you.
