Artist Spotlight: Blublabluarts - A Journey Through Bujo Art

September 15, 2023 3 min read

We recently had the pleasure of chatting with the incredibly talented bujo artist behind @blublablu_arts_by_julia. She kindly shared her journey, inspirations, and valuable tips with us. If you're interested in bullet journaling and want a peek into the creative process of a brilliant artist, keep reading!

Julia, a primary school teacher and arts-and-crafts specialist, started her artistic journey at a young age. She developed her passion through drawing classes as a child, and later technical drawing as a teenager. Eventually, she started sharing her love for art through her YouTube channel and social media accounts.

When it comes to bullet journaling, her journey began in 2015 after watching YouTube tutorials and reading "The Bullet Journal Method" ebook. She started exploring different notebooks and materials, which led her to create captivating bullet journal spreads.

She finds inspiration in a variety of sources—from seasons and festivities to books, movies, and their environment. Her bullet journaling process keeps her creativity alive, enriches productivity, and allows her to see progress beyond perfection.

Her preferred tools include a high-quality notebook like our very own 170gsm String & Space Journal, water-based markers, watercolours, scrapbook papers, and washi tapes. They believe that a good-quality notebook with proper paper thickness is essential for bullet journal lovers.

To those who want to dive into bullet journaling, here are some tips from Julia:
  • Choose a good quality notebook: thick pages to prevent ink from bleeding through. I highly recommend the String & Space Journal, because of its 170gsm paper.
  • Define your objectives: Before you begin, think about what you want to achieve with your bullet journal: organise your schedule, keep track of your habits, collections (books to read, films to watch). Being clear about your objectives will help you design the content of your bullet journal.
  • Design an index: Spend the first few pages of your bullet journal creating an index. As you add content, such as topic pages or collections, annotate them in the index so you can easily find them later.
  • Plan the months: You can start by designing a future log in which you can add important events and appointments month by month.
  • Create a monthly log every month you are going to use your notebook. Re-write there the important tasks and events of the future log to that month.
  • Design a weekly layout where you can record your daily tasks, events, and goals. Customise these layouts according to your needs and preferences.
  • Be flexible and experiment. The bullet journal is a custom tool, so don't be afraid to experiment and adjust your approach as you discover what works best for you. Try different layouts, formats, and styles to find what you find most useful and motivating.
  • Progress, not perfection. Remember that the bullet journal is a tool for you and it doesn't have to be perfect. Don't worry about making elaborate designs or having impeccable handwriting. What’s important is that it helps you stay organised and achieve your goals.

According to Julia, the most rewarding aspect of being a bullet journal artist is sharing her creations with others, inspiring them, and supporting fellow artists. One of her favourite spreads is her August 2022 cover page. It was inspired by her city and was meticulously created using stamps, drawings, and acrylic paint.

We hope this inspiring conversation with Julia encourages you to explore your own artistic journey. Stay tuned for more insights from our Artist Spotlight series!

Art has always been associated with glamour, aesthetic allure, and perfection.

Each brush stroke or penmark is done in pursuit of an ideal.

However, amid this facade, there exists a perspective that transcends the superficial perspective of art.

Mary Jo Davis (@maryjokovarikdavis) sees art beyond the glitz and glamour.

For her, art is an avenue to express the depth of her emotions or better yet, her reality.
